Good news has been more than a bit hard to come by for the Washington Capitals of late, but they got some today. Word came down from the International Olympic Committee this afternoon that the IOC’s Disciplinary Commission has elected to award Caps center Nicklas Backstrom a silver medal for his participation in the 2014 Sochi Olympic Games.
Team Sweden lost the Gold Medal game to Team Canada on Feb. 23, thereby earning the silver medal. But Backstrom had been disqualified from the game just hours before puck drop because of a positive test for a banned substance. The positive test was brought about by allergy medicine that Backstrom has been taking for the past seven years.
Here at Dump ‘n Chase headquarters, we’re extremely happy that the IOC did the right thing in awarding Backstrom the silver medal. Congratulations, Nicklas. You earned that medal and deserve it.
